OVERVIEW AND TARGET AUDIENCE

This course is designed for bariatric physicians and surgeons, pharmacists, nurses, advanced practice nurses, physician assistants, dietitians, and other clinical personnel involved with pharmaceutical care of the bariatric surgery patient.

OBJECTIVES

  • Discuss neurohormonal factors involved in the development and maintenance of obesity.
  • Review pharmacotherapeutic options for the management of obesity, including discussion on the use of obesity medications for post-op weight regain.
  • Address the role of pharmacotherapy in the prevention and management of hypoglycemia across the bariatric surgery continuum, including pre, peri, and post-operative care.
  • Review clinical challenges in providing perioperative pain control for bariatric surgery patients and highlight issues through case studies.
  • Stress concerning emerging literature on opioid use following bariatric surgery.
  • Discuss management of nausea and vomiting in the perioperative period and reinforce treatment options through case studies.
