Course Overview and Target Audience

This course is designed for practicing bariatric surgeons and surgeons new to the field who are involved in the treatment of obesity and metabolic disorders. It will cover basic and advanced flexible endoscopy as it plays an integral role in the management of the bariatric complications.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

1) Demonstrate basic balloon dilatation for strictures after gastric bypass
2) Demonstrate multiple modalities of hemostasis which include:
a. Balloon dilatation
b. Endoscopic clipping
c. Injection therapy
3) Demonstrate endoscopic stenting
4) Exposure to endoscopic Septotomy
5) Be familiar with the RF treatment modalities for GERD and Barrett’s esophagus
6) Be familiar with intragastric balloon placement and removal

Hand-On Stations

  • Endoscopic Suturing
  • Intragastric Balloon Introduction
  • Hemostasis: Clips, injection/sclerotherapy, balloon dilatation
  • Endoscopic confocal microscopy
  • Deployment of flexible covered stent
  • Septotomy
  • RFA for GERD
  • RFA for Barrett’s Esophagitis
